- Published for the first time in 1993 under the title Harlem
this book only existed for a short time in its original edition. This was
because it was impossible at the time to find the original drawings. We were
therefore reduced to using the printed materials that were available namely
the pages of Help magazine. The bad quality and small size of the
reproductions posed a number of problems and the attempt resulted in an
immense disappointment which led us to take the book out of circulation.
Today's re-release of the book is due to a miracle that has given us access to
good quality copies of the drawings which at last do justice to these sketches
and to the freshness of a style in gestation. Our thanks go to pure chance
Robert Crumb and Denis Kitchen. Simultaneously and just as miraculously eleven
